WASABI FIELD EditorialReviewed: 2026-10-13

Prepare the food and tools before you begin. Your first grating session is a chance to learn a small, enjoyable table-side ritual.

What this guide covers
Set the table first · Try a gentle circular motion · Find your own portion

Set the table first

Have your food, plate, clean grater and storage materials ready. You do not need to use the entire rhizome at once. Read the seller’s handling instructions and plan a modest first portion.

Try a gentle circular motion

The Japan Wasabi Association describes grating slowly in circles on a fine grater, starting from the stem end. Work on a stable surface and follow the instructions for your particular tool.

Find your own portion

Place a little beside the food and adjust to your preference. Note what you used and what you would like to try next. Another diner’s portion need not become your starting point.

Questions & answers

Must I grate the whole rhizome?

No. Start with what you will use and follow the seller’s storage guidance for the remainder.
