Beyond the rhizome: meet wasabi leaves and stems.

WASABI FIELD EditorialReviewed: 2026-10-13

The grated rhizome is only part of the plant. If you find leaves or stems, start by checking which part you are buying and how it should be prepared.

Distinguish plant parts from prepared products

MAFF describes edible uses for wasabi leaves and stems. Fresh plant parts and prepared pickled products are not the same purchase. Confirm whether you are receiving fresh produce or a ready-made food.

Take the preparation instructions home

Do not assume a leaf or stem should be handled like a rhizome. Ask the seller about storage and preparation for that product. Note the instructions before experimenting.

Ask a grower about the whole plant

On a future visit, ask which parts are offered and when. Record who answered and the date. This publication will distinguish genuine visits and tastings from general source-based guidance.

Questions & answers

Can every part be handled like the rhizome?
